Are you headed to the Montana resort town of Whitefish and want to pick up a memento? You already have the 406 hat, a handful full of stickers for your water bottle, and a Tshirt with a bison on it… or 4. What you really need is something special that screams Montana but is a little less branded with words and more infused with the spirit, such as hand crafted earrings, a cozy sweater to wear on the patio at the Lodge at Whitefish Lake, or something decorative for your reading nook at home. I know I like to buy non touristy things to help remember the way I felt in the spaces.
We had a good time creating content for the Sappari website all while doing our best to manifest some warmer weather. It was pretty brisk.
I love this first shot. Sometimes a photo really stands on it’s own. This is one of those images.
I met Kristina, owner of Sappari Whitefish, during the great defrost of 2018. Because she is much more punk rockabilly glam fashionista than my bohemian-ish self living up to my last name in the fashion arena, I was drawn to her immediately. At the time, I was experiencing what it was like to emerge from a deep winter slumber for the first time. Let me tell you, it’s no joke. Intense and unavoidable is really the only way to describe it. If you can’t hang with the hardest parts, can you ever really be a Montanan? Nope.
Moving from winter to Spring feels like the time lapse videos you see of sprouts wiggling out of the soil after being in a ball under the earth. You feel it. You are the literal sprout. Not only are we crawling out of our skin desperate for sunshine after 6 months of snow, the energy can get quite swirly and uncomfortable at times. This place is not for the faint of heart, the weak, or the irresolute. I never in a million years expected the energies to wake up and be able to feel it.
Side note: This gorgeous gal above and deserves an entire post of her own. She effortlessly whipped up this entire outfit last minute and rocked it.
Soooo, Kristina and I were standing in the shop chatting, me not being one for small talk, I half jokingly asked, “Is just me or does it feel like spirits are defrosting and swooping it up around town?” She smiled and leaned in. My eyes widened.
Can you feel it?
Talking about ghosts and spirits is the kind of content that could very well earn me a side eye in the coffee shop from people I have never met. I’ll risk it. The swirlies are one of the things that I love about this place. It lives and breathes on multiple planes of existence.
It can be intense. If you know, you know, and if you think you feel it, you are not wrong.
Opium dens, deadly structure fires, and underground Chinese laundry operations servicing the railroad, among other things that I have yet to learn. I know I don’t even know the half of it. Mr. Sullivan told me that it takes 20 years to become a local. I believe it but is anyone truly a local? Because according to the land, we are all visitors.
It’s not surprising that the energy is more intense in the north. We are up here getting blasted with enough energy to cause the sky to light up, and it’s also where much of the west’s water source originates. This is the Crown of the Continent, it’s sacred land and it’s not shy. If you listen closely it will tell you things.
Please share your experiences in the comments. I would love to hear them.
Get your shopping on at Sappari because surely Kristina has something that you’ll love to add to your collection of pretty things.

Enjoy your stay, find a great outfit, book a photo session, dance the night away, call a lyft, drive slowly, fish, hunt, ski, and for the love of God, tip your servers, bartenders, and baristas generously because they work so hard to give our visitors a great experience and let’s face it, the cost of living does not even compare to the rest of the state because of the tourism.
You can also find us in the latest edition of 406 Woman magazine found online and around town on new stands.
